Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter, entitled "Bordetellosis", will be included in the 10th Edition of Diseases of Swine, and reviews the etiology, public health significance, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, lesions, diagnosis, immunity, and prevention and control of diseases caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica. In swine, B. bronchiseptica is widespread and plays multiple roles in respiratory disease. It is the primary etiologic agent of nonprogressive atrophic rhinitis (NPAR), a mild to moderately severe, reversible condition, and it promotes colonization by toxigenic strains of Pasteurella multocida, which leads to severe, progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR). In young pigs, it is a primary cause of bronchopneumonia and in older pigs contributes to the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Its presence also enhances colonization with secondary bacteria other than P. multocida and increases the severity of respiratory disease associated with additional primary and secondary pathogens, including PRRSV.
