Interpretive Summary: Bacteria known as Brachyspira are difficult to grow. Special culture media and conditions that can be used to isolate and cultivate the Brachyspira are described in this manuscript.

Technical Abstract: Brachyspira species are anaerobic spirochetes inhabiting intestinal tracts of animals and humans. Several species cause transmissible intestinal diseases of swine and birds. This unit describes methods for the isolation of Brachyspira from fecal samples, cultivation on liquid and solid media, and long term and short term preservation of Brachyspira species.
