Technical Abstract: Eukaryotic SAND domain-containing proteins bind DNA and are implicated in direct target gene activation and chromatin-mediated gene regulation. We summarize our recent results demonstrating that the Arabidopsis SAND domain protein ULTRAPETALA1 (ULT1) plays a key role in counteracting target gene repression and inducing gene expression as part of a putative chromatin regulatory complex. We discuss these data in light of an article describing interacting proteins of the human SAND domain protein Aire, and propose that ULT1 and Aire act as molecular links between chromatin remodelers and transcription effectors.
