Technical Abstract: Papaya ringspot virus, transmitted by alate aphids, is the most limiting factor of papaya production in the Caribbean region. Although there are transgenic papaya varieties that provide protection from this virus, these varieties are effective only in certain regions against certain strains of the virus. This study investigated the effects of cultivated barriers on alate aphid immigration into papaya orchards. The presence of a grass hedge significantly reduced the number of aphids immigrating into orchards, thus reducing infection by this virus. Hedges provide a low-tech management solution to papaya ringspot virus management.
