Technical Abstract: Squash vein yellowing virus (SqVYV) induced watermelon vine decline is a major limitation to watermelon production in Florida. The symptoms of this disease are a systemic wilt and necrosis which spreads along the vines of plants and leads to complete collapse. Fruit on affected vines also often show rind necrosis and discoloration negatively impacting fruit quality. To examine the reaction of a wider range of cucurbits to SqVYV infection mature plants bearing fruit were mechanically inoculated with virus. Varying host reactions to infection including systemic wilt and necrosis were observed among the cucurbit species analyzed, demonstrating for the first time that SqVYV can cause vine decline in cucurbits other than watermelon.
