Triterpenoids from Two Terminalia Species. Planta Medica. DOI http://dx.doi.org/10.1055/s-0030-1249809. Interpretive Summary: The bark of Terminalia arjuna Wight & Arn (Combretaceae) is a famous Indian folk medicinal plant used as a cardio-tonic for the treatment of heart failure, ischaemic cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis and myocardium necrosis. The fruits of Terminalia chebula Retz. (Combretaceae) have been extensively used in Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathic and traditional Chinese medicine systems. In continuation to search new chemotaxonomic markers for the quality control study of the two Teminalia species, twelve triterpenoids including two new were isolated from the n-BuOH layer of the MeOH extract of the bark of T. arjuna, together with three other known compounds 3-O-methylellagic acid 4'-O-á-L-rhamnopyranoside,19) â-sitosterol and daucosterol; from MeOH extract of the fruits of T. chebula, nine known triterpenoids of oleanane were isolated. Technical Abstract: Phytochemical investigations of Terminalia arjuna bark and Terminalia chebula fruits resulted in the isolations of 12 triterpenoids including two new oleanane type triterpene glucosyl esters ajunglucosides IV (1) and V (2) from the n-BuOH layer of MeOH extract of the bark of T. arjuna as well as nine triterpenoids of oleanane type from MeOH extract of the fruits of T. chebula. |
