Annual Report to the Eastern South Dakota Soil & Water Research Farm Board of Directors, Brookings SD, March 17, 2010. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The production of corn-based ethanol in the U.S. has dramatically increased in recent years; so too has the quantity of nonfermentable coproducts (which are known as “distillers grains”). These residues are used as livestock feed, and simultaneously provide a nutritious feed ingredient for farm animals, and provide ethanol manufacturers with an additional revenue source (the production process would not be profitable were it not for the sale of coproducts). With the tremendous growth in the ethanol industry, it is imperative to continue to find ways to augment the use of distillers grains. The goal of this research project is to add value to distillers grains, which will improve the viability of the ethanol industry in South Dakota and throughout the Nation. This will help move our country toward independence from foreign oil. |
