Technical Abstract: Salmonella deposition inside eggs results from reproductive tract colonization in laying hens. In the present study, groups of hens were orally infected with S. Enteritidis, S. Heidelberg, or S. Hadar. No significant differences were observed between strains in either the frequency or numbers of Salmonella in ovaries or oviducts at 5 days postinoculation. However, significantly more internally contaminated eggs were laid by hens infected with S. Enteritidis (3.6%) than with either S. Heidelberg (0.5%) or S. Hadar (0%) through 25 days postinoculation. Egg contamination differences were apparently not due to differences in the numbers of Salmonella colonizing reproductive organs.
