Technical Abstract: The objective of this study was to screen herbicides for potential use in brassica greens. Plots were in a RBD with 4 replications. The study was direct seeded on May 19, 2009 with a seeding rate of 272,000 seeds/acre (‘Savanna’ mustard). Treatments included trifluralin PPI + DCPA pre-emergence applied (2 rates), thiobencarb, ethofumesate, clomazone, prodiamine alone (all pre-emergence applied) and an untreated check. Ratings were recorded for phytotoxicity and crop emergence on June 2, 2009, phytotoxicity and efficacy on June 17, 2009, yield on July 2, 2009. The rating scale was a 0 to 100 scale, 0=no visible crop damage, weed control or plant stand and 100 =100% of the crop or weed species being dead or non-existent or 100% of crop emerged. Data recorded at harvest included yield. No differences were observed for crop emergence. Crop injury was highest for clomazone at 0.5 lbs ai/acre on both dates. Crop injury on June 2, 2009 was 60% for clomazone. Clomazone and ethofumesate had crop injury ratings of 33 and 30%, respectively, on 6/17/09. Control of Palmer amaranth was 100% for trifluralin + DCPA at 6 lbs ai/acre, trifluralin + DCPA at 4 lbs ai/acre, thiobencarb, ethofumesate, clomazone, and prodiamine had 99, 86, 75, 94, 99% control, respectively. Yields were 8.8, 8.0. 7.7, 8.5, 6.3, 5.7, and 7.9 tons/acre, respectively, for the untreated check, trifluralin + DCPA at 4 lbs ai/acre, trifluralin DCPA at 6 lb ai/acre, thiobencarb, ethofumesate, clomazone, and prodiamine.
