Meeting Abstract. PETR #23. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: We shall discuss the use of various ionic liquids in the preparation of starch esters. Starch was reacted with vinyl acetate in different 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (bmim) salts as solvents in an effort to produce starches with different acetylation patterns. Overall degree of substitution (DS) was much higher for basic anions such as acetate and dicyanimide (dca) than for neutral anions such as chloride and nitrate. Starch stearates with a range of DS and solubilities were also prepared by heating starch, ionic liquid bmim[dca], and vinyl stearate or stearic acid. The results obtained on these systems suggested that ionic liquids can serve as convenient media for the homogeneous modification of starch. Through judicious changes in experimental conditions, we have some degree of control over the substitution patterns of the products obtained. |
