Technical Abstract: The recently discovered X (or unrecognized) intrinsic proteins (XIP) are one of the five aquaporin protein subfamilies. Aquaporin proteins are known to facilitate water transport through biological membranes. In order to identify XIP aquaporin gene candidates in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), in silico and molecular cloning efforts and subsequent sequence analyses were performed. We report the submission of one XIP subfamily gene to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. A full-length cDNA sequence of cotton XIP1;1 was isolated. XIP1;1 contains a 1,125 base pair (bp) nucleotide sequence that is translated into a 302 amino acid protein. These data provide structural and functional characteristics of the cotton XIP gene family.
