Interpretive Summary: This pamphlet provides a brief summary of SHB’s life history that can be helpful in correctly detecting and identifying the different stages of SHB. It also presents 10 best management practices that are useful in regulating SHB population in the apiaries.

Technical Abstract: Small hive beetles (SHB) have become serious pests of honey bees, especially in the southeastern region of the United States. Both adults and larvae cause serious feeding damages and their fecal matters contaminate harvestable honey. At present, Coumaphos (used as an in-hive treatment) and Gardstar (used as a soil drench) are available for SHB control. However, inconsistent results have been reported. This pamphlet provides a brief summary of SHB’s life history that can be helpful in correctly detecting and identifying the different stages of SHB. It also presents 10 best management practices that are useful in regulating SHB population in the apiaries.
