Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Reduced fish egg survival is often associated with fungal infestation (Saprolegnia spp.) of the eggs. Chemical treatments have been used to limit these infestations on fish eggs and increase survival. The effect of copper sulfate (10 mg/L), diquat bromide (25 mg/L diquat cation), formalin (433 mg/L), and hydrogen peroxide (250 mg/L) on the hatch rate of channel catfish eggs and on fungi infesting channel catfish eggs was compared in two identical experiments (5 replicates each). The egg hatches in the diquat bromide, formalin, and hydrogen peroxide treatments were significantly better than that of the controls. The maximum fungal measures of egg masses (largest measure of fungus coverage prior to hatch) treated with copper sulfate, formalin, and hydrogen peroxide were significantly smaller than the controls. The 250 mg/L treatment of hydrogen peroxide had the highest average hatch rate (64%, control was 34%), the lowest, average, maximum, fungal measure (1.5 cm, control was 7.2 cm), and lowest incidence of fungi (50%, control was 100%).
