Citation: Baranowski, T., Cerin, E. 2008. Pediatric obesity: Finding the causes and contexts. International Journal of Pediatric Obesity. 3(4):194-195. Technical Abstract: A number of recent studies have taken a very simple approach to understanding how the physical environment may influence child diet and physical activity behaviors and in turn obesity. Some of these studies have obtained conflicting and non-intuitive results. These results may have been avoided if the authors had taken a more conceptual approach in regard to selecting the ages of the group studied (to take developmental issues into account); selecting the environmental factors (to more closely select environmental factors that reflect conceptual issues of note); measuring key variables (i.e. diet) on a pathway from the environment to obesity; and controlling for likely confounding variables. A next generation of studies is necessary to take all these design factors into account.
