Interpretive Summary: Poisonous plant intoxication is a common and often deadly problem that annually costs the livestock industry more than $340 million in the western United States alone. Despite the cost or frequency, definitively identifying or diagnosing poisoning by plants in livestock is challenging. The purpose of this paper is to provide structure and information to help make an accurate or definitive diagnosis. We provide suggestions for investigating and sampling field cases, and for integrating the resulting information to obtain the best possible diagnosis.
