Technical Abstract: This chapter describes the beneficial influences of controlled atmosphere (CA) and modified atmosphere (MA) on the major quality deterioration, physiological disorders and diseases of pome fruits, and the problems resulting from improper atmosphere conditions. It discusses the interactions between 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and CA/MA. It also covers the proper fruit maturity and the specific requirement of gas composition by different cultivars.
