Technical Abstract:
In this journal article, we review the recent work by Farese and colleagues (Functional genomic screen reveals genes involved in lipid-droplet formation and utilization. Guo Y, Walther TC, Rao M, Stuurman N, Goshima G, Terayama K, Wong JS, Vale RD, Walter P, Farese RV. Nature. 2008 May 29;453(7195):657-61. Epub 2008 Apr 13.) who used a systemic, genome-wide approach to identify genes and proteins, in fruit flies, that are involved in the storage of neutral lipids within lipid droplets in cells. As a result of these studies a number of new pathways and proteins that regulate the accumulation of neutral lipids in lipid droplets within cells are identified. These studies provide novel insights into pathways that regulate fat storage and breakdown in animals and humans.
