Technical Abstract: The contents of eight mineral constituents in the tuber of potato genotypes in Tri-State and Western Regional trials grown at different locations were tested. Tubers were washed free of soil, cleaned with a 1N HCl bath, sliced with skin on, air dried, ground to a fine powder, and wet-ashed in 12 N nitric acid by heating in a sealed container using microwave heat. Analysis was performed using an Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma Emission Spectrophotometer. A 3.6-fold range of iron contents was found. It is possible that a doubling or tripling of iron content above the accepted mean would be possible by selecting within advanced breeding materials. Large ranges of content were found for calcium and potassium. Manganese showed a moderately large range of expression. Relatively little variation was found in zinc content. There was a significant location difference for iron and calcium. Potatoes grown in calcareous soils had less iron and more calcium and the converse was true. Higher mineral contents in several red-skinned white-fleshed genotypes provide preliminary incentive to look further at a possible genetic basis for high content, for specific minerals and for minerals in general.
