Technical Abstract: In comparison with traditional, phenotype-based procedures for detection and identification of foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, molecular techniques are superior in terms of sensitivity, specificity and speed. This chapter provides a comprehensive review on the use of molecular methods for diagnosis of listeriosis, including a survey of gene targets, detection formats and template preparation as well as a discussion on further research requirement that will help extend the utility and performance of molecular procedures for differentiation of Listeria bacteria.
