Technical Abstract: Synthesis and structural characterizations of nitro-benzyl cellulose, amino-benzyl cellulose and pentafluoro –benzyl cellulose were carried out. Cellulose derivatives were synthesized by etherification process in lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide homogeneous solution. Nitrobenzylation was effected in 80% yield by treating a mixture of microcrystalline cellulose (20µm), 4-dimethyl aminopyridine (DMAP) and 4-nitobenzyl chloride (4eq.) at 80 ºC overnight. Nitro-benzyl cellulose was then reduced to amino-benzyl cellulose in 93% yield with indium metal in ethanol and saturated aqueous ammonium chloride. Also, the pentafluoro-benzyl cellulose was obtained by same manner. In addition to product syntheses, their structural characterizations by FT-IR, CP/MAS 13C NMR, DSC, TGA, and MALDI-TOF methods will be shown. These reactions serve as models for future heterogeneous cotton fiber finishing technology with applications in wash fast flame and stain resistance.
