Technical Abstract: The establishment of national rules for organic production offers agricultural producers a new market opportunity. This market of organic products includes potentially the entire country. To take advantage of this market, the producer needs to follow the NOP rules of certification and production. To be able to do this, the producer needs information on production systems and methods for the crops and livestock of interest. The program tells what practices are permitted but does not indicate what is effective. Consequently, there is a need for scientifically based technical information on the production of crops for organic markets. At the Lane Agriculture Center, a facility operated as a cooperative effort between Oklahoma State University and the Agricultural Research Service of the USDA, we initiated activities in 2003 to begin to generate information that would benefit producers interested in the commercial production of organic vegetables. This report summarizes these activities.
