Interpretive Summary: Boophilus ticks are vectors of Babesia bovis, the protozoan causative agent of cattle fever, a disease which is responsible for significant production losses to cattle producers in much of Africa, Central and South America and Australia. We initiated a study of differential gene expression in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus following infection by Babesia bovis in an attempt to identify tick genes which might be critical to successful pathogen infection. These critical genes might be candidates for development of anti-Babesia control technologies. We utilized a technique called Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE) which allow quantification of expressed genes under control and infected conditions in fully engorged adult female ticks. We removed the ovary from the female and quantified gene expression in both control and infected ovaries. The experimental datasets (LongSAGE tags) have been submitted and published under GEO Submissions Series Record Number GSE9880 in the National Center for Biotechnology Information Public Database.

Technical Abstract: Boophilus ticks are vectors of Babesia bovis, the protozoan causative agent of cattle fever, a disease which is responsible for significant production losses to cattle producers in much of Africa, Central and South America and Australia. We utilized Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE) to quantify gene expression in ovaries dissected from both control and infected engorged female R. microplus. The LongSAGE tag library datasets have been submitted and published under GEO Submissions Series Record Number GSE9880 in the National Center for Biotechnology Information Public Database.
