Interpretive Summary: This popular press update is directed at growers to relate the recent appearance of whitefly-transmitted viruses in cucurbits in Florida. This report continues a cooperative research effort between ARS and University of Florida, and provides a timely account of virus infection of cucurbits to growers, Extension personnel and state and Federal regulatory and research scientists.
Technical Abstract:
Squash vein yellowing virus (SqVYV), Cucurbit leaf crumple virus (CuLCrV) and Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV) are all whitefly-transmitted pathogens of cucurbits and have recently been identified in Florida. SqVYV is the cause of watermelon vine decline in Florida, whereas CuLCrV and CYSDV cause significant economic losses in cucurbit production in the western US.
