Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The cotton genome database, CottonDB, was developed under a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) project as part of a national program to develop plant genome databases for all agricultural commodities. This first and most extensively used database for cotton worldwide functions both as an archival database and a dynamic database which incorporates new data and user resources. The new website of CottonDB, www.cottondb.org, was established in 2006. Improvements relative to the old CottonDB website (http://cottondb.tamu.edu) include several new features that allow researchers to easily browse and retrieve data from the database. Quick Queries allow the user to search for the most frequently requested information. The CMap viewer provides online map comparisons among two or more genetic or physical maps. The BLAST server allows the user to BLAST sequences against the available database of cotton sequences through a web interface. Input of germplasm data and US cotton variety test results is underway. Further enhancements in progress include updating BAC contig fingerprint data for visualizing with the FPC viewer, a Genome Browser for comparisons of the cotton vs. Arabidopsis genomes, and finishing the migration from the database’s old website to the new website (www.cottondb.org).
