Technical Abstract: Cotton producers in some states across the US cotton belt are facing increased regulatory pressure from state air pollution regulatory agencies. This increased pressure is due in part to inaccurate emission factors for many agricultural operations and poor regional air quality. The objective of this manuscript is to present the results of a two year study focused in part on developing particulate matter emission factors for cotton harvesting operations based on emission concentrations measured at the source. This novel method is unique and is anticipated to produce emission factors for TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 with much less uncertainty than previous methods. Accurate, science-based emission factors are essential to the equitable regulation of all agricultural sources. The source measurement protocol described herein may be easily adapted to other agricultural field operations to develop accurate particulate matter emission factors.
