Interpretive Summary: Congress requires USDA to monitor and assess the food intake of Americans. Under that mandate, the Food Surveys Research Group conducts the large-scale Federal food consumption survey What We Eat in America (WWEIA), the dietary interview component of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The information collected is used by public policy administrators and other government groups, the food industry, dietitians, as well as nutrition and health researchers. Dietary intake data collected in the 2003-2004 WWEIA, NHANES have been analyzed and 8 summary data tables have been developed. The tables provide estimates of mean intakes of food energy and 62 nutrients/dietary components, as well as the contribution of protein, fat, carbohydrate, and alcohol to daily calorie intakes of Americans. Population-estimate categories include all individuals 2 years and older of the U.S. population, 21 age/gender groups throughout the life cycle, as well as race/ethnicity and income groups. Race/ethnicity categories include white, black, and Mexican-American. Income data were reported as annual family income, as well as a percentage of the Federal poverty threshold. Technical Abstract: The Food Surveys Research Group conducts What We Eat in America (WWEIA) survey, the dietary interview component of the National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES). In the survey, dietary intakes are collected on a nationwide sample of 5,000 individuals yearly using the USDA 24-hour dietary recall method, the Automated Multiple Pass Method. Dietary intake data are analyzed and mean nutrient intake tables of the U.S. population are published with each survey data release. The tables from the 2003-2004 WWEIA, NHANES provide population level results from analyzed dietary data of mean nutrient intakes and the contribution of fat, protein, carbohydrate, and alcohol in the American diet. The tables provide estimates of mean intakes of food energy and 62 nutrients/dietary components for 21 age/gender groups throughout the life cycle as well as for race/ethnicity and income categories.
