Title: Comprehensive description for newly introduced accessions in the USDA rice germplasm collection

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: New accessions are introduced to the USDA Plant Germplasm System (PGS) each year which requires characterization for key plant descriptors was well as seed increase for distribution to the public. In 2004, 1,412 rice accessions released from the APHIS Quarantine Program were grown out and characterized in Stuttgart, AR. The accessions were introduced from 40 countries with 409 coming from Colombia. Nigeria donated 235 cultivars which was about four times the existing number of accessions. Cuba donated 19 accessions doubling what had been in the PGS. Eleven accessions from North Korea and one from Burundi were introduced where the PGS had only one cultivar from each of these countries previously. Introduction of the cultivar ‘Altamira 7’ was the first accession in the PGS from Nicaragua. Fifteen descriptors including agronomic traits - days to flower, plant height, plant type, panicle type, awn type and lodging; grain traits - hull and bran colors, kernel length, width and length/width ratio and grain weight; and grain quality traits - protein content, apparent amylose content, and alkali spreading value were characterized for these accessions. Descriptor data are displayed in the PGS web-site at www.ars-grin.gov. Seeds of the 1,412 accessions are curated by the National Small Grains Collection for public distribution for research purposes and are also stored in the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation for long term security.
