Interpretive Summary: Crop genetic diversity for future plant breeding efforts to meet agricultural challenges is held primarily in plant (seed) genebanks, including chickpea. Biodiversity management is summarized for the global chickpea (Cicer arietinum) crop germplasm held in genebanks around the world. The largest collections are held at international agricultural research centers, ICRISAT in India with 17,258 accessions and ICARDA in Syria with 12,448 accessions, along with large national collections in the USA, Iran, Australia, India, and Russia. The status of the collections, maintenance issues, genetic diversity held, core collections, and documentation using internationally standardized crop descriptors are discussed.

Technical Abstract: Biodiversity management is summarized for the global chickpea (Cicer arietinum) crop germplasm held in genebanks as ex situ collections. Morphological diversity is presented with the range of variation reported from the global collections. The largest collections are held at international agricultural research centers: International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT Panacheru, India) with 17,258 accessions and International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA Allepo, Syria) with 12,448 accessions, along with large national collections in the USA, Iran, Australia, India, and Russia. The status of the collections and maintenance issues are presented as well as core and mini-core collections for trait discovery, and documentation using International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI; now Bioversity International) published crop descriptors are discussed. Germplasm enhancement (pre-breeding) strategies are summarized.
