Technical Abstract: Uster Technologies, Inc. has developed a cotton bale moisture measurement device located in rollers used to transport the bale, referred to as the FBM. The USDA, ARS Cotton Ginning Unit in Stoneville, MS plans to evaluate the FBM to determine measurement accuracy and performance. Thirty bales were ginned with a wide range of controlled lint moisture content; some with no moisture added to the lint, some with spray-type moisture restoration and some with moist air-type moisture restoration. The bales were measured with the FBM and then the moisture content was determined by the oven method for lint samples taken between each bale tie. The meter made one measurement across the width of the bale at each inch of movement down the length of the bale. The raw and processed FBM data are being evaluated and compared to the oven-based moisture data.
