Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Controlled release systems are widely used in numerous applications. Polymers from natural resources, such as pectin, starch, zein and poly(lactic acid) have been used to construct carriers of bioactive substances and deliver them in a designed manner. The retention and release of volatile fragrances from aqueous solutions can be regulated by altering the types and the amounts of pectin derivatives in the systems. Pectin and poly(lactic acid) composite films prepared by extrusion method were examined for the adsorption and sustained release of nisin, a model anti microorganism polypeptide; the composite films can be used as active packaging materials. In this article, we reviewed the approaches and fabrication techniques of using plant polysaccharides in controlled release systems for food preservation, food quality improvement, food packaging and fertilizer management. Challenges in these areas were discussed and new strategies for greater achievements were suggested.
