Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Most organisms synthesize secondary products with biological activity that is useful in their defense. Defense can be against vertebrates, arthropods, mollusks, plants (both algal and higher plants), and microbes. Many of these compounds have been used from ancient times to the present as pharmaceuticals. Others have had utility as pesticides or as the molecular building blocks of pesticides. This brief chapter will highlight some of the more important natural product-based pesticides, as well as mention some of those that our group has discovered. More detailed reviews and books on this general subject are available [e.g., 1, 2], as are reviews on specific types of natural product-based pesticides [e.g., 3].
