Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) first appeared in the late 1980s, though serologic evidence indicates that it had been circulating in swine for some time prior to being recognized. PRRS has since become a highly significant infectious disease affecting swine production worldwide. Abortions, mortality and decreases in growth rate and efficiency associated with PRRS all impact swine welfare and have a serious economic effect on swine production, estimated at over $560 million per year in the U.S. alone.
