Interpretive Summary: Host-plant resistance is the preferred means to control plant diseases and pests. Sugarbeet cyst nematode (SBCN) is considered one of the major pests of sugarbeet in the USA and worldwide. Resistance to SBCN has been a major objective in sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris) breeding for about 100 years. Resistance from genetically distant Beta procumbens has been transferred and introgressed into sugarbeet but will not breed true and results in low yield and purity in the absence of nematodes. Recently moderate resistance was found in Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima germplasm by R.T Lewellen and transferred to sugarbeet. This resistance acts in a dominant fashion, appears to be fairly simply inherited, and in field tests protects against most damage done by SBCN. Lines of sugarbeet with resistance were developed and after testing for reaction to SBCN and other diseases and for performance released to the sugarbeet seed industry. These lines called CN927-202, CN926-11-3-22, and CN921-306 or resistance transferred from these lines will provide genetic host-plant resistance to this important nematode pest.
