Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Viral RNA extraction is a critical step for any molecular downstream application and correct sample collection and handling is critical to obtaining reliable results for virus recovery or detection. The choice of Specimen type depends on numerous factors and must be compatible with the downstream application and the sample type dictates the RNA extraction method. In this chapter the processing of samples for avian influenza (AI) virus RNA from common specimen types for further molecular applications will be presented.
