Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The chapter on Plant Regulatory Organizations is part of a book titled Pest Management and Phytosanitary Trade Barriers authored by Neil Heather (Australia) and Guy Hallman. It covers the role of plant regulatory organizations from the international to state level in protecting plant health. At one end of the spectrum is the International Plant Protection. It is an international treaty signed by four fifths of the countries of the world dedicated to prevent the spread of invasive plant pests. Several regional plant protection organizations fortify this goal on a regional basis. For example, the US is a member to the North American Plant Protection Organization. Several professional societies cover the discipline of phytosanitary agriculture on a piecemeal basis. There is a need for an international journal dedicated solely to phytosanitary issues. Model phytosanitary certificates are included in the chapter.
