Technical Abstract: The main activity is with Beta genetic resources in North America evaluation and pre-breeding. There are 2513 accessions conserved, including lines, old varieties and 571 B. vulgaris subsp. maritima. Much research is based on pathology, ranging from epidemiology to the detection of markers. An ongoing project is the study of B. vulgaris subspecies maritima from the coasts of France. Plants grown in a garden and quantitative measurements were taken, with the aim of examining genetic variation within the collection, and also to help identify suitable candidate accessions for a core collection. Further goals include finding morphological differences and correlating these with genes. M. McGrath is trying to locate genes and map them, both physically and genetically. The only collecting mission carried out recently was focused on Beta nana in Greece. Following an ECP/GR ad hoc meeting on the Beta core collection, the national core collection was coordinated with the GENRES Beta project core collection.
