Technical Abstract: For more than 30 years, poultry has been cited as an important source for direct or indirect infection of humans by Campylobacter jejuni. Numerous intervention techniques have been developed for on-farm control of human pathogens, especially Salmonella. Some Salmonella intervention strategies may have application in reducing populations of Campylobacter associated with poultry although there is a need for the development of additional Campylobacter specific strategies. This presentation is designed to give a general overview of current and potential on-farm intervention strategies for reducing carriage of Campylobacter spp. in the poultry production environment. Drawing from the most current literature on the subject, intervention procedures ranging from traditional biosecurity techniques to innovative competitive enhancement strategies including prebiotics, probiotics and competitive exclusion will be presented. Recent progress in the area of direct anti-pathogen strategies will be discussed with special emphasis given to advances in bacteriocin research and additives to enhance immune response in poultry.
