Technical Abstract: Halosulfuron registration in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is currently being considered through the Interregional Research Project number 4 (IR-4). Halosulfuron was evaluated for crop injury and weed control in potato when applied postemergence alone and in combinations with rimsulfuron in 2004 and 2005. Trials were conducted on a Quincy sand on potato grown under center pivot irrigation near Paterson, WA. Herbicides were applied when potatoes were 15 cm tall and treatments were replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Halosulfuron applied postemergence to ‘Umatilla’ potato at 18, 26, and 35 g ai/ha caused temporary chlorosis and reduced potato height at three weeks after application. Combining rimsulfuron with halosulfuron further reduced potato height compared to halosulfuron alone at 18 and 26 g/ha in 2004 and at all halosulfuron rates in 2005. Rimsulfuron applied alone at 18 or 26 g/ha did not significantly injure potato or reduce potato height. Potato tuber yield was reduced 12 to 28% in 2004 and 28 to 44% in 2005 when halosulfuron was applied alone at all three rates compared to hand weeded checks. Potato yield loss was attributed to lack of hairy and black nightshade control. Potato tuber yield was not reduced by combinations of halosulfuron and rimsulfuron, which greatly improved nightshade control compared to halosulfuron alone.
