Technical Abstract: Currently two pathogens, Bacillus thuringiensis and Indianmeal moth granulovirus, are registered for control of stored-product pest insects. Very little field work has been done with other pathogen species, and there is a paucity of methodology guidance for researchers in this area. The chapter first provides a brief overview of stored-product insects and the pathogens that infect them. Then a review of sampling methods is provided with comments on how they apply to pathogens. Finally, sample protocols are provided for bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, as well as a general protocol for warehouse and retail environments. This chapter will be a valuable tool for beginning researchers and help to ensure successful field trials for the development of microbial controls of stored-product pests.
