Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biological weed control is an important component in sustainable crop production systems. Environmental and social pressures that shift the dependency on chemical herbicides towards integrated weed management strategies have provided opportunities for use of bioherbicides. A pragmatic approach in the selection of appropriate target weeds and suitable bioherbicide candidates, including population structure, is required to ensure the successful application of these microbial-based technologies. Fundamentals in formulation and application technology as well as weed ecology are essential in order to realize the full potential and application of biological control agents for management of multi-species weed communities in agroecosystems.
