Technical Abstract: Cucurbit Leaf Crumple Virus (CuLCrV) is a recently described, sweetpotato whitefly biotype B-transmitted virus of cucurbits in the desert southwest U.S.A. ‘Top Mark’, a standard orange flesh, shipping type melon (Cucumis melo L.) was susceptible and expressed severe symptoms in two naturally infected field tests in Imperial Valley, Calif. in 2003 and 2004. PI 313970 exhibited resistance to CuLCrV in these tests. It was asymptomatic in 2003, but 20 of 30 plants evaluated in 2004 expressed symptoms. The difference in the reaction of PI 313970 could be due to seasonal differences in its reaction to infection by CuLCrV, and/or a difference in disease pressure. Inheritance data from a cross of ‘Top Mark’ and PI 313970 (F1, F2 and backcrosses to each parent) indicated recessive genetic control of the resistance reaction of PI 313970 to CuLCrV.
