Interpretive Summary: Flower moth caterpillars, a group of cutworm moths that cause billions of dollars of agricultural damage annually, eat the flowers and seed capsules of their host plant resulting in loss to native plants which are important to maintaining the native biodiversity of tall and short grass prairies. Four species new to science are re-described and made available for use by the scientific community because the previous author did not follow the Rules of Zoological Nomenclature. Adults and characters used for identification of these species are illustrated. The results will be useful for scientists, entomologists, land use management scientists, and APHIS-PPQ inspectors and identifiers will use this information.
Technical Abstract:
Article 13.1.1 of the Code of Zoological Nomenclature states that names published after 1930 must have a description that defines and differentiates the taxon with characters. Four species of Heliothinae described by Hardwick (1996) did not follow Article 13.1.1; thus, they are nomen nuda. The following species are validated by description and illustrations of the adult and genitalia: Schinia angulilinea new species (=S. arizonenesis Hardwick), S. maculata new species (=S. blanca Hardwick), S. erythrias new species (=S. pulchra Hardwick), and Heliolonche anneae new species (=H. joaquinensis Hardwick).
