Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Background: Aging is a process associated with physiological changes such as changes in body composition, energy expenditure and physical activity. Data on energy and nutrient intake adequacy among the elderly is important for disease prevention and health maintenance in this age group. Objective: To determine the adequacy of energy and nutrient intakes of elderly persons in the rural community of Balete, Batangas, Philippines. Methods: Three non-consecutive 24-hour food recalls were conducted among 88 ambulatory persons aged 60-100 years to assess their usual energy and nutrient intakes. Participants were asked to recall all solid and liquid foods consumed the previous day. Portion sizes were estimated using measuring cups and spoons and food models. Energy and nutrient intakes were computed using the Philippine Food Composition Tables, and percent adequacies of mean intakes were determined based on the Philippine Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intakes (RENI). Results: The mean energy intake of elders was 1,129 kcal, an amount which is less than 70% adequate based on the RENI. The contributions of carbohydrate, fat and protein to the total energy intake were 77.9%, 10.8%, and 11.1% respectively. Niacin intake was only 77%, and thiamin and riboflavin intakes were less than 40% of the recommended values. Vitamin A and C intakes were less than 30% of recommendations. Calcium intake was 26% of the RENI for females and 33.6% for males. Conclusion: Elderly people in this population suffer from both macro- and micro-nutrient malnutrition. Their diet quantity is insufficient as indicated by the low mean intake of energy and all nutrients. The risk of malnutrition-related diseases among the elderly is of immediate concern, thus increased focus on their nutrition and health is necessary.
