Technical Abstract:
An automated mosquito counting trap has been designed and tested in laboratory cages. It employs a custom designed infrared beam sensor head retrofit into a commercial counter-flow technology trap (MM-X, American Biophysics Corp.). The trap provides time-stamped insect counts that can be downloaded to a computer or transmitted back to a central computer by radio telemetry. When combined with a light, temperature, and humidity data logger, the prototype system demonstrates feasibility for mosquito surveillance and as a behavioral research tool.
