Interpretive Summary: Records are presented concerning the origin and characteristics of three pecan cultivars: 'Excel', 'Die Guet', and 'Waco'. In addition, a record is made of the use of a new name, 'Starking Southern Giant' for a previously described cultivar, 'Silverback'. A "cultivar" is a cultivated variety of a plant. In the pecan industry, cultivars are propagated by grafting. Records of the origin and characteristics of pecan cultivars help nurserymen and scientists identify and propagate appropriate trees for their areas. 'Excel' is a disease resistant seedling found in Georgia that has been submitted for a plant patent by its originators. 'Die Guet' is a Texas native pecan that has been locally propagated since the 1920's because of excellent nut quality. 'Waco' is a controlled cross made by the USDA ARS Pecan Breeding Program and released for use by the western pecan region on the basis of outstanding nut quality. Pecan cultivars are described on the basis of their origin, nut shape, nut size, percentage kernel, patterns of bloom (when known), and patterns of tree performance.

Technical Abstract: This document provides information for three pecan cultivars, 'Excel', 'Die Guet', and 'Waco', and documents the commercially use of the name 'Starking Southern Giant' for a cultivar previously described under the name 'Silverback'. For each entry, history of origin is presented chronologically, with brief but important details concerning dates, locations and individuals responsible. Nut characters are described using standard descriptors of nut shape and quality. Patterns of phenology and performance are provided, as known.
