Technical Abstract: Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS,) for both commercial and experimental uses, has been under development in many parts of the world in response to several driving forces. With regards to sites for coastal aquaculture, the scarcity of affordable land has driven aquaculture endeavors for marine species to look inland for commercial production sites. Faced with this reality, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the Aquaculture Division of Harbor Branch, and Florida State University have collaborated in a program for developing sustainable inland marine aquaculture systems. As part of this effort, a large-scale, multi-tank, experimental recirculating system for replicated production studies was constructed at the Aquaculture Park on the HBOI campus. There are two different 4-tank RAS designs, each replicated four times inside a 46m x 23 m steel building. Each 4-tank system includes solid and suspended wastes removal, bio-filtration, oxygenation, pumping, and UV-sterilization. This facility allows for replicated studies of nutritional, engineering, and economic parameters important for the developing culture techniques for low salinity tolerant species.
