Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We developed an automated system that collects near-infrared (NIR) spectra from single kernels and then performs a four-way sort based on user-selected criteria. The system utilizes the singulator wheel from the SKCS 4100 (Perten Instruments, Springfield, Illinois) that delivers individual kernels to a viewing stage where NIR spectra are measured using an InGaAs spectrometer. Solenoid-driven diverters are then used to sort the kernels, or to divert the kernels back to the singulator wheel for repeated measurements. The system is useful for selecting specific kernels with specific traits from within samples. For examples, single kernels can be separated by hardness to study how hard and soft kernels from within pure cultivars affect bread quality. The hard and soft kernels selected from pure cultivars can also be returned to breeders to study genetic and environmental effects on hardness. Similar experiments can also be conducted to study variations in protein content, starch content, vitreousness, etc within samples; to study moisture content as affected by tempering; to detect insects inside wheat kernels; or to detect sprout or fusarium damage in samples. Perten Instruments is producing a commercial version of this system.
