Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: America’s fruits and nuts industry was built from the efforts, over the past 100 years, of a number of productive fruits and nuts breeders in North America. While many of these breeders had outstanding publication records and produced important cultivars, they were also an interesting group of personalities with different goals, ideals, and motivating forces. This 2003 American Society of Horticultural Science Fruit Breeding Working Group Workshop attempts to put a human face on these breeders. Strawberry breeders of Eastern North America are certainly not without character. Interviews with collaborators, colleagues, friends, neighbors, and family reveal the personal side of these strawberry breeders. It’s clear that, although hobbies and community activities helped define these individuals, the more interesting facets of their personalities are revealed in the fields side-by-side with colleagues engrossed in the work that was a joy to each of them.
