Technical Abstract: The late Luis Angel Salas Fonseca, from the University of Costa Rica, was a world renowned researcher in agricultural entomology, plant-feeding nematodes, and plant-feeding mites. This paper provides a summary of his career and his important contributions to the study of pestiferous insects and mites. The obituary will be of interest to entomologists around the world, but especially to researchers in Costa Rica, United States and the rest of the Western Hemisphere.
