Technical Abstract: In 1989 there were two basic traps available for mosquito surveillance, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the New Jersey (NJ) light trap. These traps were not considered to be useful for population control. Bug Zappers were the only available device marketed for mosquito control. Since 1989 there has been some interest in the development of attractant-baited traps for mosquito control. This technology has generated little interest as a mosquito control device by professional mosquito workers either in the academic or abatement district worlds. The impetus for trap development has come from private industry to address the fears of homeowners who wanted protection from mosquito borne diseases such as West Nile Virus. Over forty different types of traps have been developed. Their major features and relative efficacies will be presented. Some of these traps are being used by abatement districts for mosquito population surveillance.
